Beyond the Sourdough: Trad Wives and the Far Right

What can sourdough, staying at home and a carefully curated Instagram feed tell us about the rise of the far right? The “tradwife” has become a hugely successful social-media phenomenon, presenting traditional femininity, marriage, motherhood and staying at home as an escape from capitalism and patriarchy. But what happens when a supposedly apolitical lifestyle becomes part of a wider political and cultural project? This workshop looks beyond the aesthetics to explore who funds this content, how it is marketed to young women, and how it connects with far-right ideas about gender, race, religion and family. It examines the contradiction of influencers advocating a return to the home while running lucrative personal brands, and asks why the online tradwife is so often young, white and conventionally feminine. This is not about demonising women who stay at home, but understanding why the message resonates with people failed by capitalism and what alternative visions anarchists can offer.
