Anarchism in Spain – Origins to Revolution

This talk will provide an overview of the history of anarchism in Spain prior to the Civil War of 1936–39. Themes include the origins, strength and longevity of the movement; anarchist culture, education and feminism; violence and repression; worker organisation and the formation of the anarcho-syndicalist Confederación Nacional del Trabajo (CNT); and developments in the Second Republic from 1931 to the outbreak of Civil War. This discussion provides context for the Bristol Radical History Group stream of talks in the main hall, situating the monumental events of the Civil War and Revolution within Spain’s deep anarchist tradition.
